How do I Filter in Lightroom Classic?

Published in Lightroom Filters 3 mins read

You can filter photos in Lightroom Classic using the Library Filter bar located at the top of the Grid view in the Library module. Here's how:

Filtering Steps:

  1. Select a Source: In the Library module, choose the folder, collection, or catalog you want to filter from the Catalog, Folders, or Collections panel on the left. This specifies the pool of photos you'll be filtering from.

  2. Activate the Library Filter Bar: If it's not already visible, press the backslash key (\) to show or hide the Library Filter bar at the top of the Grid view.

  3. Choose a Filter Category: The Library Filter bar offers several filtering categories. Select the category you want to use:

    • Text: Filter by keywords, filenames, or other searchable text fields.
    • Attribute: Filter by flags, star ratings, color labels, edit status, and copy status. This is a very common filtering method.
    • Metadata: Filter by camera information (camera, lens, ISO), date, location, and more.
    • Faces: Filter based on detected faces.
  4. Apply Filter Criteria: Once you've chosen a category, click on the specific criteria within that category to apply the filter:

    • Example (Attribute): If you select the Attribute filter, you can click the flag icons to show only flagged, rejected, or unflagged photos. You can also click star ratings to display photos with a specific rating or higher. Similar options exist for color labels, edit status, and copy status.

    • Example (Text): If you select the Text filter, you can type a keyword into the search box to only show photos with that keyword applied.

    • Example (Metadata): If you select the Metadata filter, you can use the column headers to filter images based on various metadata such as date, camera model, lens, or ISO setting. You can add more columns by clicking the "+" icon on the right of the metadata filter bar.

  5. Refine Your Filter (Optional): You can combine different filters to narrow down your results even further. For example, you could filter by 5-star rated photos that also have a specific keyword.

Clearing Filters

To remove a filter and see all photos again, click the small "x" on the far right of the Library Filter bar.

By understanding and utilizing the Library Filter, you can quickly locate specific photos within Lightroom Classic's extensive catalog.
