Published in Lightroom Import 2 mins read

To import a video into Lightroom, use the import function similarly to how you import photos.

Here's how to import a video into Lightroom:

  1. Open Lightroom: Launch the Lightroom application on your computer or mobile device.
  2. Access the Import Function:
    • On Desktop: Click the "Import" button, typically located in the lower-left corner of the screen, or go to File > Import Photos and Videos.
    • On Mobile: Tap the ( ) icon on the left to bring up My Photos panel.
  3. Select the Source: Navigate to the location on your computer or storage device where the video file is located.
  4. Choose the Video: Select the specific video file you want to import. You can often preview the video before importing.
  5. Specify Import Options (Desktop):
    • Add: Adds the video to the Lightroom catalog in its current location.
    • Copy: Copies the video to a new location and adds it to the Lightroom catalog. This is often recommended for organization.
    • Move: Moves the video from its current location to a new location and adds it to the Lightroom catalog. Be cautious using this option.
  6. Select the Destination (If copying or moving on Desktop): Choose the folder where you want the video file to be stored. Lightroom will then add it to the catalog.
  7. Click "Import": Click the "Import" button to start the import process. On Mobile: In My Photos panel, import the video or choose the album that contains the video you want to edit.
  8. Locate the Video: Once imported, the video will appear in your Lightroom catalog, ready for editing.

Important Considerations:

  • File Formats: Ensure that Lightroom supports the video file format (e.g., MP4, MOV).
  • Storage: Be mindful of your storage space, especially when importing large video files.
  • Organization: Develop a consistent folder structure for your videos to keep your Lightroom library organized.
  • Editing: After importing, you can use Lightroom's video editing tools to make adjustments to the video. If you're in Photo Grid ( ) view or Square Grid ( ) view, select the video you want to edit.
