How do you change the opacity of a mask in Lightroom?

Published in Lightroom Masking 2 mins read

You can adjust the opacity of a mask in Lightroom using the Masking Amount slider.

Adjusting Mask Opacity

Here's how you can change the opacity of a mask in Lightroom:

  1. Create a Mask: Begin by creating a mask using any of the masking tools available in Lightroom, like the brush, radial gradient, or linear gradient.
  2. Locate the Masking Amount Slider: According to the reference, the "Masking Amount slider is located at the top of the 'Effect' portion of the masking controls." It will appear once you start applying edits via sliders or brush presets.
  3. Adjust the Opacity: Once you have applied changes to your image with the mask, the slider will become active. Now, you can use this slider to reduce or increase the intensity of the mask. Reducing the amount reduces the effect of the adjustments made within the mask, which has the effect of lowering its opacity.

Using the Amount Slider

  • The amount slider will only activate once you make changes to the exposure, contrast, and other sliders, or select a brush preset within the mask.
  • Before these changes, the slider will remain grayed out.
  • When the amount slider is moved to 0, it fully removes the mask’s effect on the image.
  • Moving it to 100, will apply the effect at full strength.
Slider Description
Amount Slider Controls the strength/opacity of the mask.
0 Value Removes the mask's effect completely.
100 Value Applies the mask's effect at full strength.

Practical Insights:

  • Fine-tuning: Use the Amount slider to fine-tune the mask's visibility, making the edits subtle and natural.
  • Subtle Edits: By decreasing the opacity, you create subtle adjustments that blend the changes more effectively with the original image.

By following these steps, you can easily manage the opacity of your masks in Lightroom and have greater control over how your edits affect the image.
