How Do I Write Metadata Changes Into XMP in Lightroom?

Published in Lightroom Metadata 1 min read

To automatically write metadata changes into XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) in Lightroom, follow these steps:

Steps to Enable Automatic XMP Writing

  1. Access Catalog Settings: Go to Edit > Catalog Settings (Windows) or Lightroom Classic > Catalog Settings (macOS).

  2. Navigate to the Metadata Tab: In the Catalog Settings dialog box, click on the Metadata tab.

  3. Enable Automatic Writing: Select the checkbox labeled Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.

By enabling this setting, Lightroom will automatically save metadata changes (such as adjustments and settings) directly into the XMP data of your image files. This ensures that the metadata travels with the files and is accessible by other applications that support XMP, even if they don't use the Lightroom catalog.
