How to Make Natural Red Lip Balm

Published in Lip Balm Recipe 2 mins read

Create a naturally red lip balm by combining coconut oil, beeswax, jojoba oil, and beetroot powder. This simple recipe yields a moisturizing and naturally tinted lip balm.

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil (organic virgin coconut oil is recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons white beeswax (pellets are easy to use)
  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil (100% pure is best)
  • 1 tablespoon beetroot powder (organic beetroot powder is preferred)

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a double boiler or heat-safe bowl set over a pan of simmering water, gently melt the coconut oil and beeswax together. Stir occasionally until completely melted and smooth.
  2. Add Oils and Powder: Remove from heat and stir in the jojoba oil and beetroot powder. Mix thoroughly until the powder is evenly distributed and no clumps remain.
  3. Pour and Cool: Pour the mixture into small lip balm containers. Allow to cool and solidify completely at room temperature. This process usually takes about 1-2 hours.

Tips for Success:

  • Adjust the Beetroot Powder: For a deeper red, add more beetroot powder. For a lighter tint, use less. Experiment to achieve your desired shade.
  • Double Boiler: Using a double boiler prevents burning the ingredients. If you don’t have a double boiler, a heat-safe bowl over a pan of simmering water works just as well. Ensure the water doesn't boil aggressively and maintain low heat.
  • Storage: Store your lip balm in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its quality and color.

Why These Ingredients?

  • Coconut Oil: Provides moisturizing and softening properties.
  • Beeswax: Acts as a natural thickener and creates a protective barrier on the lips.
  • Jojoba Oil: A highly moisturizing oil that closely resembles the skin's natural sebum, leading to effective hydration.
  • Beetroot Powder: A natural, plant-based pigment that provides the red color.
