A Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) blood test measures the amount of GGT enzyme in your blood. GGT is a protein that helps the body break down and use certain substances. It is found in high levels in the liver, but also in other organs like the kidneys, pancreas, heart, and brain.
A high GGT level can indicate a problem with the liver or bile ducts. The bile ducts carry bile, which is a fluid produced by the liver that helps digest fats. Damage to the liver or bile ducts can cause GGT to leak into the bloodstream. This can be caused by various conditions such as:
- Liver disease: This includes hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease.
- Bile duct obstruction: This can be caused by gallstones, tumors, or other conditions.
- Alcohol abuse: Alcohol can damage the liver and raise GGT levels.
- Certain medications: Some medications, such as certain antibiotics and anticonvulsants, can also raise GGT levels.
A GGT test is often performed along with other liver function tests to help diagnose and monitor liver health.
