What is the normal range for LFT?

Published in Liver Health 1 min read

The normal range for liver function tests (LFTs) can vary slightly depending on the lab performing the test and the individual's age and sex. However, here are some commonly accepted ranges:

  • Alanine transaminase (ALT): 7 to 55 units per liter (U/L)
  • Aspartate transaminase (AST): 8 to 48 U/L
  • Alkaline phosphatase (ALP): 40 to 129 U/L
  • Albumin: 3.5 to 5.0 grams per deciliter (g/dL)
  • Total protein: 6.0 to 8.0 g/dL
  • Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT): 5 to 40 U/L

If your LFT results fall outside the normal range, it may indicate a problem with your liver. However, it's important to note that elevated LFTs can also be caused by other factors, such as medications, alcohol consumption, or muscle damage. Your doctor will review your results in the context of your medical history and other symptoms to determine the cause of the abnormal levels.
