How to Stop Bump Keys?

Published in Lock Security 2 mins read

The most effective way to stop bump keys is to upgrade to a high-security lock.

Bump keys exploit vulnerabilities in standard pin tumbler locks by using a specially cut key and a sharp rap (bumping) to momentarily align the pins, allowing the lock to be turned. Fortunately, not all locks are susceptible to this technique.

Upgrade to a High-Security Lock

Switching from a basic lock to a high-security model is the recommended method to prevent bumping. These locks are designed with features that counteract the bumping method.

Here are the key types of locks that offer protection against bump keys, based on advanced designs:

  • Locks with Trap Pins: These specialized security pins are designed to actively jam the lock if an incorrect key, such as a bump key, is inserted and manipulated. Instead of aligning the pins, the trap pins catch, effectively locking the mechanism and making it invulnerable to bumping.
  • Specifically Designed Bump-Resistant Locks: Many reputable lock manufacturers now offer lines of locks that are explicitly engineered to resist bumping. These locks utilize various internal modifications, security pins (like trap pins, mushroom pins, or spool pins), tighter tolerances, or alternative locking mechanisms that make the bumping technique ineffective. When looking for a new lock, prioritize those labeled as "bump-resistant" or "high-security."

By choosing a lock with features like trap pins or one specifically designed for bump resistance, you significantly enhance your security and protect against this common bypass method.
