What is the test for lungs?

Published in Lung Function Testing 1 min read

The test for lungs often refers to Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs), also known as lung function tests, which assess how well your lungs are working.

Why are Lung Function Tests Performed?

If you have warning signs or risk factors for a lung disease, such as:

  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Asthma

Your healthcare provider might order spirometry, among other tests, to check your lung function. These tests help diagnose and monitor lung conditions.

Common Lung Function Tests

Test Description
Spirometry Measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how quickly you can exhale air.
Lung Volume Measurement Determines the total amount of air your lungs can hold.
Diffusion Capacity Test Measures how well gases like oxygen pass from the lungs into the bloodstream.
Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Measures the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in your blood. This test helps assess how effectively your lungs are moving oxygen into the blood and removing carbon dioxide.
