Published in MacBook Maintenance 3 mins read

Cleaning out your MacBook Air involves several steps to optimize its performance and free up storage space. Here's a comprehensive guide:

  1. Update Your Software: Keeping your macOS up-to-date ensures you have the latest performance improvements, bug fixes, and security patches. Go to System Preferences > Software Update.

  2. Tidy Your Start-Up: Reduce the number of applications that automatically launch when you start your MacBook Air. This can significantly improve boot times.

    • Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups.
    • Select your user account and click on the "Login Items" tab.
    • Remove any apps that you don't need to launch automatically by selecting them and clicking the minus (-) button.
  3. Clean Out Unused Apps: Uninstall applications you no longer use. These apps take up valuable storage space.

    • Drag the app icon from the Applications folder to the Trash.
    • Alternatively, use a dedicated uninstaller if the app came with one.
  4. Clean Out the Downloads Folder: The Downloads folder often accumulates unnecessary files. Regularly clear it out. Move files to their appropriate locations (e.g., Documents, Pictures) or delete them if no longer needed.

  5. Tidy Up Your Storage Disk: Identify and remove large, unnecessary files.

    • Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage.
    • Use the recommendations and review large files, downloaded files, and supported documents.
    • Consider moving files to an external hard drive or cloud storage to free up space.
  6. Clean Out the Cache: Clearing the cache can improve performance and free up space. Be cautious when deleting cache files, as deleting the wrong ones could cause problems.

    • System Cache: These are typically managed by the system and do not require manual cleaning.
    • Application Cache: Each application has its cache folder. Closing the applications will generally clear them out.
    • Browser Cache: Clear the cache of your web browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox). Look for the option in the browser's settings or history menu.
  7. Remove Resource-Hungry Programs: Identify and close programs that are consuming a lot of CPU or memory.

    • Open Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor).
    • Click on the "CPU" or "Memory" tab to sort processes by CPU usage or memory usage.
    • Quit any programs that are using excessive resources and that you don't need.
  8. Take Out the Trash: Empty the Trash to permanently delete the files you've moved there. Right-click on the Trash icon in the Dock and select "Empty Trash."
