To delete an Apple user on your Mac, navigate to System Settings and remove the desired user. Here's how:
-
Open System Settings: Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select "System Settings".
-
Go to Users & Groups: In the sidebar, find and click on "Users & Groups". You might need to scroll down to see it.
-
Select the User: You'll see a list of users. Next to the user you want to delete, click the "i" icon (information) or the three dots.
-
Delete the User: Click "Delete User..." or "Remove...".
- Important: You cannot delete a user that is currently logged in.
-
Choose Deletion Options: You'll be presented with a few options regarding the user's home folder:
- Save the home folder in a disk image: This creates an archive of the user's data that you can later access. This is the recommended option if you might need the data later.
- Delete the home folder: This permanently removes the user's data. Be very careful with this option.
- Don't change the home folder: This leaves the user's home folder intact. The folder is still there, but the account is no longer active.
-
Confirm the Deletion: Enter your administrator password if prompted and confirm the deletion.
Important Considerations:
- Deleting a user is permanent, especially if you choose to delete the home folder. Be certain before proceeding.
- Ensure you have backed up any important data before deleting a user.
- You need administrator privileges to delete other users.
- Deleting a user account will also remove their associated data, such as documents, settings, and preferences, depending on the chosen deletion option.
