What is More Powerful Than a Natural Magnet?

Published in Magnetism 1 min read

Artificial magnets are more powerful than natural magnets.

Natural magnets, such as lodestone, occur naturally and possess inherent magnetic properties. However, their magnetic strength is limited by their composition and formation process.

Artificial magnets, also known as electromagnets or synthetic magnets, are created using human-engineered processes. This allows for greater control over their composition, shape, and magnetization. As a result, artificial magnets can be manufactured to be significantly stronger than any naturally occurring magnet. The ability to control the materials and manufacturing process are key to this difference in strength. For example, neodymium magnets (a type of artificial magnet) are far more powerful than lodestone. Electromagnets can be made even more powerful, but their magnetic field only exists when an electric current is flowing.
