Do dolphins have dimples?

Published in Marine Biology 1 min read

Yes, some dolphins have dimples, specifically bottlenose dolphins.

Bottlenose dolphins are born with whiskers similar to those of seals along their snouts. These whiskers fall out shortly after birth, leaving behind small dimples known as vibrissal pits. These pits are the remnants of the whisker follicles. A study from the University of Rostock in Germany confirmed this in November 2023. While not the same as the dimples humans have on their cheeks, these vibrissal pits function as dimples.
