How Do You Put On a Double Strap Mask?

Published in Mask Safety 2 mins read

Putting on a double-strap mask, like a P2 or N95, involves specific steps to ensure a secure and effective fit.

Steps for Properly Wearing a Double Strap Mask:

  1. Preparation: Ensure your face is clean and free of anything that might interfere with the mask's seal. This includes facial hair in the area where the mask seals against your skin and any dangling jewelry, such as earrings.

  2. Position the Mask: Hold the mask in your hand with the straps hanging freely. The nose piece should be at the top.

  3. Place on Face: Cup the mask over your nose and mouth, ensuring it covers your face from the bridge of your nose to below your chin.

  4. Secure the Straps:

    • Top Strap: Place the top strap around the crown of your head, above your ears.
    • Bottom Strap: Position the bottom strap around your neck, below your ears.
  5. Adjust the Nose Piece: Pinch the metal nose piece around your nose to create a snug seal. This is crucial to prevent air leakage.

  6. Check the Seal: Perform a seal check. This involves:

    • Inhale: If the mask collapses slightly, you have a good seal.
    • Exhale: If you feel air leaking around the edges of the mask, readjust the straps and nose piece until the seal is secure.
    • If you can't achieve a good seal due to facial hair, consider shaving or using a different type of respirator.

Key Considerations:

  • Fit is paramount: A properly fitted mask is essential for its effectiveness. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Comfort: While a tight seal is necessary, the mask should also be comfortable enough to wear for extended periods. Adjust the straps as needed to achieve a balance between comfort and security.
  • Regular checks: Periodically check the seal of the mask, especially if you are moving or performing physical activities.
