Properly putting on and removing a face mask is crucial for effective protection and preventing the spread of germs.
Putting On a Face Mask
Before touching the mask, always clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Here are the steps to put on a mask correctly:
- Inspect the Mask: Check the mask for any tears or holes. Do not use a damaged mask.
- Identify Front and Back: Determine the front (usually colored) and back (usually white or lighter) of the mask. The stiff edge or metal strip goes at the top, over your nose.
- Hold by Straps: Hold the mask by the ear loops or ties. Avoid touching the main body of the mask.
- Position the Mask: Bring the mask up to your face. Position the mask over your mouth and nose. Pull the mask to your nose level and pull the top strap over your head so that it rests over the crown of your head.
- Secure the Bottom Strap: Pull the bottom strap over your head so that it rests at the nape of your neck. (If using ear loops, loop them around each ear).
- Fit to Nose: Once the mask is secured to your face, mould or pinch the stiff edge to the shape of your nose to create a tight seal.
- Ensure Coverage: Pull the bottom of the mask down so it covers your mouth, nose, and chin completely.
- Check the Fit: The mask should fit snugly against the sides of your face without gaps. You should be able to breathe easily.
Removing a Face Mask
Removing a mask safely is just as important as putting it on correctly to avoid contaminating yourself or your surroundings.
Follow these steps for safe mask removal:
- Clean Your Hands: As with putting it on, clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before removing the mask.
- Avoid Touching the Front: Do not touch the front of the mask, as this is the most contaminated part.
- Remove by Straps: Grasp the mask only by the ear loops or ties.
- For masks with head straps: Gently lift the bottom strap from the nape of your neck, then lift the top strap from the crown of your head.
- For masks with ear loops: Lift off the ear loops simultaneously.
- Discard Properly: Hold the mask away from your face and clothing. Immediately place it in a trash bin, ideally one with a lid. Reusable masks should be placed in a bag for laundering.
- Clean Your Hands Again: Clean your hands again immediately after removing and discarding or storing the mask.
Key Practices
- Do not touch the mask while wearing it. If you must touch or adjust it, clean your hands immediately afterward.
- Replace masks when they become dirty, wet, or damaged. Single-use masks should not be reused.
- Never hang a mask around your neck or rest it on your forehead.
Following these simple steps for putting on and removing your face mask correctly helps protect yourself and others.
