How do you cut block work?

Published in Masonry 2 mins read

Cutting block work, typically referring to concrete blocks, is done using a chisel and hammer to create a controlled break.

Here's a step-by-step process:

  1. Mark the Cutting Line: Use a pencil or marker to clearly indicate where you want to cut the block. Accuracy is important for a clean break.

  2. Score a Groove:

    • Position the chisel's cutting edge along the marked line.
    • Lightly tap the chisel with the hammer to create a shallow groove, about 1/8 inch deep, all the way around the block. This scored line helps guide the break.
  3. Deepen the Score:

    • Reposition the chisel in the scored groove.
    • Strike the chisel more forcefully with the hammer, deepening the groove.
    • Continue working along the marked line, gradually deepening the score on all sides of the block.
  4. Split the Block:

    • With a sufficiently deep score, a few firm strikes on the chisel should cause the block to split cleanly along the scored line. You might need to alternate sides, deepening the groove on each side to encourage a straight break.

Important Considerations:

  • Safety: Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying debris. Gloves are also recommended to protect your hands.
  • Chisel Type: Use a cold chisel designed for masonry work.
  • Hammer Size: A 2-3 pound hammer is generally sufficient.
  • Alternative Methods: For larger jobs or increased precision, a masonry saw (wet saw) can be used. This provides a cleaner, straighter cut with less effort.
