What affects toughness?

Published in Material Properties 1 min read

Toughness is affected by several factors, including temperature.

Factors Influencing Toughness

Toughness, a material's ability to absorb energy and plastically deform before fracturing, is not a fixed property. It varies based on several factors.

Temperature

The temperature at which a material is loaded significantly impacts its toughness.

  • High Temperatures: According to research (27-Feb-2023), at higher temperatures, a material's toughness tends to decrease. This is often due to a reduction in its strength and an increase in ductility. While increased ductility might seem to suggest greater toughness, the decrease in strength often outweighs this, leading to a lower overall toughness.
