A number in which another number is divisible is called a multiple of that number.
In simpler terms, if you can divide one number (the multiple) by another number and get a whole number result with no remainder, then the first number is divisible by the second, and is therefore a multiple of the second.
For example:
- 12 is divisible by 3 because 12 / 3 = 4 (a whole number). Therefore, 12 is a multiple of 3.
- 20 is divisible by 5 because 20 / 5 = 4 (a whole number). Therefore, 20 is a multiple of 5.
- 15 is divisible by 1, 3, 5, and 15 because 15/1 = 15, 15/3 = 5, 15/5 = 3, and 15/15 = 1 (all whole numbers). Therefore, 15 is a multiple of 1, 3, 5, and 15.
Essentially, a multiple of a number is the result of multiplying that number by any whole number.
