How to light link in Maya?

Published in Maya Lighting 3 mins read

Light linking in Maya allows you to control which lights illuminate specific objects in your scene, providing granular control over your lighting setup. One common way to manage light linking is through the Relationship Editor, focusing on the "Light Centric" approach.

Understanding Light Linking in Maya

Maya's light linking capabilities enable you to break the default rule where every light affects every object. This is crucial for complex scenes where you might want a light to affect only a character, or exclude a certain prop from a fill light, for example.

The primary tool for managing these relationships is the Relationship Editor. Within this editor, you can establish connections between lights and objects or groups of objects.

Steps for Light Centric Linking

One method for light linking involves using the Light Centric Light Linking view in the Relationship Editor. This perspective allows you to select a light or a set of lights and then determine which objects or object sets they affect.

To begin light linking using the Relationship Editor and a light-centric approach:

  1. Navigate to the Relationship Editor in Maya.
  2. Within the Relationship Editor, select Light Centric Light Linking. This mode arranges the editor panels to show lights (or light sets) on one side and potential objects/object sets on the other, allowing you to establish connections by clicking.

Creating Light Sets

Managing numerous lights individually can become cumbersome. Maya allows you to group lights into Light Sets to simplify the linking process. Once a set is created, you can link the entire set to objects or object sets, affecting all lights within that set simultaneously.

To create a Light Set within the Relationship Editor (while in Light Centric mode):

  • In the left panel of the Relationship Editor, which lists your Light Sources, select the specific lights you wish to group together.
  • Go to the Edit menu within the Relationship Editor window.
  • Select the option Create Light Set from Highlighted Lights.
  • Maya will then add a new light set entry at the bottom of the list of lights in the left panel. You can then rename this set for clarity.

Once the Light Set is created, you can select it in the left panel and then select the objects or object sets in the right panel that you want the lights within this set to illuminate.

By using the Relationship Editor and organizing your lights into sets, you can efficiently manage complex lighting scenarios and precisely control the illumination of your scene's elements.
