End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is a serious medical condition where a person's kidneys permanently stop functioning. When this happens, the individual needs regular dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive. Dialysis is a process that filters the blood, which the kidneys can no longer do. A kidney transplant involves surgically implanting a healthy kidney from a donor. ESRD is often the final stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
