HNP stands for Herniated Nucleus Pulposus.

Understanding Herniated Nucleus Pulposus (HNP)

A herniated nucleus pulposus, often abbreviated as HNP, is a condition affecting the intervertebral discs in the spine. The intervertebral discs act as cushions between the vertebrae. In HNP, the soft, gel-like center (nucleus pulposus) of the disc pushes through a weakened or torn outer layer (annulus fibrosus). This can lead to several problems:

  • Back pain: The herniation itself can cause localized pain.
  • Nerve root irritation: The displaced nucleus pulposus can compress or irritate nearby nerve roots. This can lead to radiating pain, numbness, or weakness in the extremities, depending on the location of the herniation.

HNP is a common cause of back pain and sciatica (pain radiating down the leg due to sciatic nerve irritation).
