Is a Long Tongue Good or Bad?

Published in Medical Condition 2 mins read

Whether a long tongue is "good" or "bad" depends on the cause of the tongue being long. If it's simply a normal variation, it's neither good nor bad. However, if it's due to a condition called macroglossia, it can be problematic.

Macroglossia: When a Long Tongue is a Problem

Macroglossia is the medical term for an abnormally large tongue. It can lead to several difficulties:

  • Feeding difficulties: Infants and children with macroglossia may have trouble latching onto a nipple or bottle, making feeding challenging.
  • Breathing problems: An excessively large tongue can obstruct the airway, potentially causing breathing difficulties, especially during sleep.
  • Drooling: Difficulty managing saliva due to the tongue's size can result in excessive drooling.
  • Speech impediments: A large tongue can interfere with articulation, leading to speech problems.
  • Dental and jaw issues: Macroglossia can affect the positioning of teeth and the development of the jaw.
  • Facial appearance: The tongue's size can alter facial aesthetics.

In cases where macroglossia causes significant problems, tongue reduction surgery (making the tongue smaller) may be necessary to alleviate these difficulties.

Important Note: This answer focuses on true macroglossia. Some people may perceive their tongue as long without it actually being abnormally large.
