What singer has a disease?

Published in Medical Condition 1 min read

Céline Dion is a singer who has been diagnosed with a disease.

Céline Dion has a rare neurological disorder known as stiff-person syndrome (SPS). This condition causes progressive muscle stiffness and spasms, impacting her ability to sing and perform. Her sister revealed in February 2024 that Dion "no longer has control of her muscles." The diagnosis was initially revealed in December 2022, leading to the postponement and eventual cancellation of tour dates. Stiff-person syndrome affects the central nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms can include stiff muscles in the trunk and limbs, and greater sensitivity to noise, touch, and emotional distress, which can trigger muscle spasms. Because SPS affects muscle control, it unfortunately impacts a singer's ability to use the vocal cords and diaphragm effectively.
