How Big is a CT Scanner?

Published in Medical Imaging 1 min read

A CT scanner is a large piece of medical equipment, often described as being shaped like a large donut or "polo mint."

The key dimensions relating to the patient are:

  • Hole Width (Aperture): Approximately 3 feet (0.91 meters) in diameter. This is the opening where the patient lies during the scan.
  • Depth: Around 10 inches (25.4 cm). This is how far into the scanner the patient moves for each slice of the scan.

While these dimensions refer to the inner dimensions relevant to the patient, the entire machine itself is significantly larger, occupying a substantial portion of a room to accommodate the necessary X-ray equipment, computer systems, and cooling mechanisms. The external dimensions can vary depending on the specific model.
