The length of an MRI study depends on several factors:

  • Area Being Scanned: Larger areas of the body require more imaging time. A scan of a small joint, like an ankle, will usually be quicker than a scan of the entire spine.
  • Number of Images Taken: The more images needed to provide a detailed view, the longer the study will take.
  • Specific MRI Sequences: Different MRI sequences are used to highlight different tissues or detect specific conditions. Some sequences take longer to acquire than others. A single scan using a specific sequence may only take a few seconds to 3 or 4 minutes.
  • Use of Contrast Dye: If contrast dye is used, this can add time to the procedure, both for the injection itself and for the additional scans acquired after the dye is administered.
