Published in Medical Law 1 min read

The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971, in India, allows for abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy.

  • Up to 12 weeks: A pregnancy can be terminated based on the opinion of one doctor.
  • Up to 20 weeks: A pregnancy can be terminated based on the opinion of two doctors.
  • Beyond 20 weeks: Terminating a pregnancy requires the approval of a Medical Board established at the state level in cases of substantial fetal abnormalities.

These guidelines are subject to changes as per the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Act, 2021.

Note: The specific guidelines and procedures for MTP may vary based on individual circumstances, and seeking consultation with a healthcare professional is recommended for accurate information.
