A dilation and curettage (D&C) should be relatively painless because anesthesia is used.
Understanding D&C and Pain Management
A D&C is a medical procedure that involves dilating the cervix and removing tissue from the uterus. To minimize discomfort, anesthesia is always used.
Types of Anesthesia Used
There are three main types of anesthesia that can be used for a D&C:
- General anesthesia: This puts you to sleep, so you won't feel anything.
- Regional anesthesia: This numbs a specific area of your body, like your lower abdomen.
- Local anesthesia: This numbs only the immediate area where the procedure is taking place.
Before the Procedure
Before your D&C, you will likely be asked to empty your bladder, this is standard practice to help facilitate the procedure and improve comfort.
During the Procedure
Due to anesthesia, you will not feel pain during the D&C.
After the Procedure
Some cramping or discomfort after the D&C is possible, which usually can be managed with pain medication, but the procedure itself is not painful.
Anesthesia Type | Pain During Procedure | Pain After Procedure |
---|---|---|
General | None | Possible cramping |
Regional | None | Possible cramping |
Local | None or minimal | Possible cramping |
