What is a D&C procedure?

Published in Medical Procedure 1 min read

A dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure is a surgical procedure that removes tissue from the inside of the uterus. It involves dilating the cervix, the lower, narrow part of the uterus, and then scraping the uterine lining (endometrium) with a curette, a spoon-shaped instrument.

D&Cs are performed for various reasons, including:

  • Diagnosis: To remove tissue samples for examination to diagnose conditions like uterine cancer or abnormal bleeding.
  • Treatment: To remove abnormal tissues or growths in the uterus, such as polyps or fibroids.
  • After miscarriage: To remove remaining tissue from the uterus after a miscarriage.

A suction D&C uses suction to remove uterine contents. It is often used after a miscarriage to remove the fetus and other tissues if they haven't been expelled naturally.

A D&C is typically a short procedure performed under general anesthesia. Most women experience mild discomfort and cramping afterwards, and they can usually return to their normal activities within a few days.
