What is the M&T procedure?

Published in Medical Procedure 1 min read

The Myringotomy and Tube insertion (M&T) procedure, also known as ear tube surgery, is a quick procedure (approximately 15 minutes) involving making a small incision in the eardrum to drain fluid from the middle ear and inserting a small tube.

Here's a breakdown of the M&T procedure:

  • Visualization: The surgeon uses an operating microscope to clearly view the eardrum.
  • Myringotomy: A tiny incision (myringotomy) is made in the eardrum.
  • Fluid Removal: Any fluid present in the middle ear is suctioned out.
  • Tube Insertion: A small tube (grommet tube, ear tube) is inserted into the incision. This tube allows air to enter the middle ear, preventing fluid buildup.
