Punch Biopsy
A punch biopsy is a simple procedure used primarily for skin samples. A small, circular instrument punches out a tiny piece of skin tissue. This technique is often used to investigate skin conditions such as rashes, moles, or other suspicious lesions. The procedure is typically performed in a doctor's office or clinic under local anesthesia.
Needle Biopsy
Needle biopsies are used to obtain tissue samples from deeper areas within the body. A hollow needle is guided using imaging techniques like X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, or MRI scans to reach the target tissue. The needle is then inserted to collect a tissue sample. This method allows doctors to obtain samples from organs or tissues located deep beneath the skin's surface. Needle biopsies may be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the location and complexity of the procedure.
Examples of Needle Biopsy Usage:
- Obtaining a sample from a lung mass (guided by CT scan).
- Sampling a suspicious area in the liver (guided by ultrasound).
- Collecting a tissue sample from a breast lump (guided by mammography or ultrasound).
The choice of biopsy method depends on the location of the tissue to be sampled, the type of tissue, and the suspected condition. After the sample is obtained, it's sent to a laboratory for pathological examination, enabling doctors to make an accurate diagnosis.
