Can stitches stay in for years?

Published in Medical Sutures 1 min read

Yes, some types of stitches can remain in the body for years, or even permanently. This depends on the material used.

Generally, stitches (sutures) fall into two categories: absorbable and non-absorbable.

  • Absorbable sutures: These are designed to be broken down and absorbed by the body over time. They don't need to be removed. The absorption time varies depending on the suture material, ranging from days to months.

  • Non-absorbable sutures: These sutures are intended to stay in place unless removed by a healthcare professional. Some non-absorbable sutures can be left in the body indefinitely, while others might eventually degrade, albeit very slowly. These sutures maintain their strength for a very long time, sometimes 300 days or more. Examples of materials used for these sutures include:

    • Nylon
    • Polypropylene
    • Polyethylene
    • Polyester
    • Certain natural fibers

Whether a stitch remains in place for years is a matter of the suture material used and the purpose of the stitch. While some are designed to be permanent, they may occasionally cause issues that require removal.
