What is Prune Belly Syndrome Called?

Published in Medical Syndromes 1 min read

Prune belly syndrome is also called triad syndrome or Eagle-Barrett syndrome.

This rare congenital disorder primarily affects males and is characterized by a distinct set of three key abnormalities:

  • Deficiency of abdominal muscles: This results in a wrinkled appearance of the abdominal wall, resembling a prune, which gives the syndrome its common name.
  • Undescended testicles (cryptorchidism): One or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum.
  • Urinary tract abnormalities: Most notably, an enlarged bladder, ureters, and sometimes kidney problems are present.

The varying severity of each of these characteristics leads to a wide range of clinical presentations. While the exact cause of prune belly syndrome is still not fully understood, it is believed to be related to disruptions in abdominal wall development during fetal development.
