What diseases cause high ESR?

Published in Medical Test 1 min read

A high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) usually indicates inflammation in the body. This can be caused by various diseases, including:

  • Autoimmune disorders: In these conditions, the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, causing inflammation. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Infections: Infections, particularly bacterial infections, can trigger inflammation and increase ESR. This includes infections like pneumonia, tuberculosis, and endocarditis.
  • Cancers: Some cancers, especially those that spread throughout the body, can elevate ESR.
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases: Chronic inflammatory diseases like inflammatory bowel disease and vasculitis can cause a persistently high ESR.
  • Blood disorders: Some blood disorders, such as polycythemia and sickle cell disease, can lead to a higher ESR.
  • Other causes: High ESR can also occur due to conditions like pregnancy, anemia, and certain medications.

It's important to note that a high ESR doesn't automatically diagnose a specific disease. It is often used as a screening tool to indicate the presence of inflammation and requires further investigation to determine the underlying cause.
