Is PPD Test Painful?

Published in Medical Testing 2 mins read

A PPD (Purified Protein Derivative) test, also known as a Mantoux test for tuberculosis (TB), may cause a slight sting. You'll likely feel a small prick as the needle is inserted just under the skin.

What to Expect During and After the PPD Test

  • During the Injection: Expect a quick, mild sting when the PPD solution is injected. It's similar to a very small bug bite.

  • After the Injection: A small, raised bump (wheal) will form at the injection site. This is normal and usually disappears within a few hours.

  • Discomfort Level: The level of pain is generally considered minimal and very short-lived. Most people find it quite tolerable.

  • Follow-up: The important part isn't the injection itself, but the reading of the test 48-72 hours later. A healthcare professional will check the injection site for any induration (a firm, raised area).

Pain Management (If Needed)

Because the pain is minimal, pain management is generally not required. If you experience any persistent discomfort (which is rare), you can apply a cold compress to the injection site. Avoid scratching or rubbing the area.

In summary, while you might feel a brief sting during the PPD test, it's generally not considered painful. The discomfort is usually minor and short-lived.
