What is a flash period?

Published in Menopause & Perimenopause 1 min read

A flash period is an unexpected menstrual period that occurs after a woman has gone several months without one, often during perimenopause, leading her to believe her periods have stopped permanently.

In other words, it's the surprise reappearance of menstruation after a period of absence, giving the impression that menopause has begun, only to be interrupted. Think of it as a "false alarm" in the transition to menopause.

While the experience can be confusing and sometimes unwelcome, it's a relatively common occurrence during perimenopause. It's depicted in popular culture, such as the Sex and the City reboot series "And Just Like That…", highlighting its relatability and prevalence.
