Periods, or menstruation, stop permanently during menopause. This is a natural and normal part of a woman's life that typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. However, menopause can happen earlier, which is known as premature menopause, or later, which is known as delayed menopause.
- Premature menopause: Occurs before the age of 40.
- Early menopause: Occurs between the ages of 40 and 45.
- Delayed menopause: Occurs after the age of 55.
A doctor can diagnose menopause after a woman has gone 12 months without a menstrual period, vaginal bleeding, or spotting. While menopause is usually a natural process, it can also be caused by medical treatments, such as surgery or chemotherapy.
