How do you use a feminine napkin?

Published in Menstrual Hygiene 2 mins read

Using a feminine napkin (also known as a sanitary pad) is simple: you stick it to the inside of your underwear to absorb menstrual flow. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Choose the Right Pad: Feminine napkins come in various absorbencies (light, regular, heavy/super, overnight) and lengths. Select the one that best suits your flow. Consider the size of your underwear when choosing the length. Some pads also have wings for extra protection.

  2. Prepare the Pad: Take a new pad out of its wrapper. Most pads have a sticky strip on the back covered by paper. Peel off this paper to expose the adhesive. Some also have wings with similar adhesive coverings.

  3. Position the Pad: Center the pad in the crotch of your underwear, sticky side down. The pad should lie flat and comfortably cover the area where you need protection.

  4. Secure the Wings (if applicable): If your pad has wings, fold them around the outside of your underwear and stick them to the underside. This helps keep the pad in place and prevents leaks.

  5. Ensure Comfort: Make sure the pad is positioned comfortably and isn't bunching or rubbing. You should be able to move freely without feeling restricted.

  6. Change Regularly: Change your pad every 3-4 hours, or more frequently if your flow is heavy. You should also change it if it feels wet or uncomfortable. Leaving a pad on for too long can lead to odor and increase the risk of infection.

  7. Disposal: Wrap the used pad in its original wrapper or toilet paper and dispose of it in a trash can. Never flush pads down the toilet, as they can clog plumbing systems.

Reusable Pads:

If you are using a reusable cloth pad, the process is similar, but instead of adhesive, they usually fasten with snaps or velcro around the gusset of your underwear. Change and wash them according to the manufacturer's instructions.

In summary: Peel off the backing, stick the pad to your underwear, secure the wings (if any), and change it regularly.
