How to Change a Pad in School?

Published in Menstrual Hygiene 3 mins read

Changing a pad discreetly and hygienically in school requires a bit of planning. Here’s how to do it:

Preparing to Change Your Pad

  • Create a Period Kit: Assemble a small, discreet bag or pouch containing:

    • Pads (enough for the day)
    • Wipes (for freshening up)
    • A small disposal bag (for used pads if a bin isn't readily available)
    • Hand sanitizer
  • Choose the Right Outfit: Opt for clothing with pockets or a bag where you can easily and discreetly carry a pad.

Discreetly Taking a Pad to the Bathroom

  • Concealment is Key:

    • In your pocket: Slip a pad into your pocket, ensuring it's not obviously visible.
    • In your hand: Hold a pad in your hand, concealed by your fingers or other items like a book or phone.
    • In your bag: Keep your period kit readily accessible in your bag.
  • Act Natural: Avoid drawing attention to yourself. Walk to the bathroom with confidence and purpose.

Changing Your Pad in the Bathroom

  1. Find a Stall: Choose a stall for privacy.

  2. Remove the Old Pad: Carefully remove the used pad.

  3. Wrap and Dispose: Wrap the used pad in its wrapper or a small disposal bag (if available). Dispose of it properly in the designated bin. If a bin is unavailable, keep the sealed bag with you until you can dispose of it properly. Never flush a pad down the toilet, as this can cause plumbing problems.

  4. Clean Up: Use a wipe to freshen up, if desired.

  5. Apply the New Pad: Remove the backing from the new pad and securely attach it to your underwear.

  6. Wash Your Hands: Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

  7. Exit Discreetly: Leave the bathroom confidently.

Timing Your Changes

  • Between Classes: The time between classes can be a good opportunity to change your pad.
  • During Breaks: Utilize longer breaks like lunch or recess for a more relaxed change.

Additional Tips

  • Be Prepared: Always keep a few extra pads in your locker or bag for unexpected situations.
  • Talk to a Trusted Adult: If you're feeling anxious or have concerns about managing your period at school, talk to a parent, teacher, or school nurse. They can offer support and guidance.
  • Understand School Policies: Be aware of your school's policies regarding menstruation and bathroom use.
