Can You Feel Your Period Blood Coming Out?

Published in Menstruation 2 mins read

Most of the time, you don't feel your period blood coming out. However, with a heavy flow and the use of a pad or liner, you might notice the blood's presence as it leaves your body. This sensation, when experienced, should be painless.

Understanding Period Blood Flow

The amount of blood lost during a period is typically small, only about 2–5 teaspoons or around 60 milliliters (2 ounces). While this may seem like a significant amount, the body's natural processes generally don't produce a noticeable sensation during this discharge.

  • Light Flow: With a light flow, you are unlikely to feel the blood exiting your body.
  • Heavy Flow: With a heavy flow, and especially with a pad or liner in place, you might feel a slight wetness or pressure. Again, this feeling should be painless.
  • Retrograde Menstruation: In rare cases, retrograde menstruation occurs, where menstrual blood flows back into the abdomen. This situation might create a feeling that your period is "stuck" or not coming out properly, however this is also rarely noticeable.

Using Sanitary Products: Wearing a tampon or pad can help absorb the blood quickly, preventing the sensation of blood exiting the body. Even with a pad or liner, the feeling is typically minimal due to the small amount of blood lost.

Important Note: Pain during menstruation is usually associated with cramping, not the blood itself. Any pain alongside menstruation warrants consultation with a healthcare provider.
