How to Separate Meshes in Fusion 360

Published in Mesh Separation Fusion 360 2 mins read

Separating meshes in Fusion 360 is done using the Separate command found within the Mesh tab of the Design workspace.

To divide a single mesh body into multiple parts or separate selected face groups into distinct mesh bodies, you use the dedicated Separate tool in Fusion 360. This process is straightforward and can be applied to different sections of your mesh.

Here are the steps to separate meshes in Fusion 360:

  1. Navigate to the Design workspace.
  2. Access the Mesh tab.
  3. On the Mesh tab, locate the Modify panel and select the Separate command. This action opens the Separate dialog.
  4. In the dialog box that appears, you will need to select a separation Type. (Note: The specific types available allow you to control how the separation occurs).
  5. In the canvas, select the mesh body you wish to separate, or specifically select face groups within the mesh that you want to isolate.
  6. Optionally, if you selected specific face groups in the previous step and want each selected group to become its own independent mesh body, check the Multiple Bodies option in the dialog.
  7. Once you have configured the options and made your selections, click OK in the dialog to perform the separation.

Understanding Separation Options

The Separate tool offers options to give you control over the outcome:

  • Type: The dialog prompts you to select a Type. Different types determine how the separation is calculated (e.g., based on connectivity). Choosing the appropriate type is key to getting the desired result.
  • Multiple Bodies: This checkbox is particularly useful when you've selected multiple distinct face groups within a single mesh body. Checking this option ensures that each selected face group is converted into its own separate mesh body in the Fusion 360 browser, rather than them remaining part of the original mesh or combining into fewer separated parts.

By following these steps, you can effectively manage and segment your mesh data within Fusion 360 for further editing, analysis, or export.
