How do I Disable Google Messages?

Published in Messaging App Settings 2 mins read

You can disable Google Messages primarily by switching to a different default SMS app, or by turning off RCS (Rich Communication Services) features. Here's how to accomplish that:

Switching to a Different Default SMS App

  • Long press: On your device's home screen or app drawer, long-press the Google Messages app icon.
  • App Info: Tap the "app info" icon, usually represented by an (i) symbol or a circle with an "i" in it.
  • Choose Default: In the app settings, find the option related to the default messaging app. This is often labelled something like "Messaging app".
  • Select Alternative: Choose a different messaging app from the list that appears. This will be the standard SMS messaging app icon, such as a speech bubble with "..." inside it, or your phone manufacturer's messaging app.

Disabling RCS Features

RCS (Rich Communication Services) are an enhanced form of text messaging. If you disable RCS, some Google Messages features will no longer work:

  • Open Settings: Navigate to your device's settings app.
  • Search for RCS: Use the search bar within settings and type "RCS" or "RCS chats".
  • Toggle Off: Find the "Turn on RCS chats" toggle, and switch it OFF. This disables the advanced features.
