How do I delete messages on Messenger?

Published in Messenger Messages 2 mins read

To delete messages on Messenger, you can remove them for yourself or, in some cases, unsend them for everyone, depending on the platform you are using.

Steps to Delete Messages

The process varies slightly depending on whether you are using Messenger via a web browser (Messenger.com) or the dedicated desktop application.

On Messenger.com

If you are accessing Messenger through a web browser at Messenger.com, follow these steps to delete a message:

  • Open the Messenger conversation where the message is located.
  • Find the specific message you want to remove.
  • Hover your mouse cursor over the message.
  • Select the "More" option that appears.
  • Click on "Remove".

On the Desktop App

If you are using the Messenger desktop application, the method for removing messages is slightly different:

  • Open the Messenger conversation.
  • Find the message you wish to delete.
  • Right-click on the message.

Once you right-click, you will typically see options regarding how the message is removed.

Removal Options: "For You" vs. "For Everyone"

When deleting a message, especially on the desktop app based on the provided information, you are often given a choice:

  • Remove for You: This option deletes the message only from your view. The message will still be visible to other participants in the conversation.
  • Remove/Unsend for Everyone: This option attempts to remove the message for all participants in the conversation. This is often referred to as "unsending" the message. Note that there are time limits for unsending messages after they have been sent.

By following these steps, you can manage and remove messages from your Messenger conversations on both Messenger.com and the desktop app.
