What is TYMc?

Published in Microbial Testing 1 min read

TYMc stands for Total Yeast/Mold Count. It's a microbiological test used to determine the total number of viable yeast and mold organisms present in a sample.

In microbial enumeration tests, TYMc is often performed alongside TAMC (Total Aerobic Microbial Count) to provide a comprehensive assessment of the microbial load.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Purpose: To quantify the number of yeast and mold organisms.
  • Methodology: Typically involves culturing a sample on a selective or non-selective growth medium that favors the growth of yeasts and molds. Common media include Sabouraud Dextrose Agar.
  • Significance: Important in quality control for pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, and other products where yeast and mold contamination can lead to spoilage or health risks. High TYMc values may indicate inadequate hygiene practices, improper storage conditions, or compromised product quality.
  • Media: Culture media based on Casein Soy Bean Digest or Sabouraud Dextrose are often used for TYMc.
