What is the old name for a microscope?

Published in Microscope History 1 min read

The old name for a microscope was "occhiolino", which translates to "little eye" in Italian. This name was given by Galileo Galilei to the compound microscope he submitted to the Accademia dei Lincei in 1625. Later, Giovanni Faber coined the term "microscope" for the instrument, deriving it from the Greek words "mikros" (small) and "skopein" (to look).
