How do I insert a column to the left in Excel?

Published in Microsoft Excel 2 mins read

To insert a column to the left of an existing column in Excel, right-click on the column header and select "Insert." This will insert a new, blank column to the left of the selected column.

Here's a step-by-step breakdown:

  1. Select the column: Click on the column header (the letter at the top of the column, like "A", "B", "C", etc.) to select the entire column to the right of where you want the new column to appear.
  2. Right-click: Right-click anywhere within the selected column. This will open a context menu.
  3. Click "Insert": In the context menu, find and click the "Insert" option. Excel will automatically insert a new, blank column to the left of the column you selected. The existing column and all subsequent columns will shift to the right.

Example:

Let's say you want to insert a new column to the left of column "B".

  1. Click on the column header "B". This selects the entire column B.
  2. Right-click on any cell in column B.
  3. Click "Insert" in the context menu.

A new, blank column will now be inserted to the left of what was previously column B. The old column B is now column C.
