How to Set Graph Size in Excel?

Published in Microsoft Excel 2 mins read

You can set the graph size in Excel either manually by dragging the sizing handles or by specifying exact height and width measurements.

Here's how to do it:

1. Manual Resizing (Dragging):

  • Click on the chart to select it. You'll see sizing handles (small circles or squares) appear around the chart's border.
  • Click and drag any of the sizing handles to resize the chart. Dragging a corner handle maintains the aspect ratio, while dragging a side handle only changes the width or height.
  • Release the mouse button when the chart is the desired size.

2. Resizing with Specific Measurements:

  • Click on the chart to select it. This will activate the "Chart Tools" contextual tab in the Excel ribbon.
  • Click the "Format" tab under "Chart Tools". If the "Chart Tools" tab does not appear, simply selecting the chart area should bring it to view.
  • Locate the "Size" group on the right side of the "Format" tab.
  • In the "Height" and "Width" boxes, enter the desired measurements. Excel will automatically resize the chart to match these values. You may need to ensure "Lock Aspect Ratio" is not checked in the chart's Format pane if you want to change the height and width independently.

Example:

Let's say you want your chart to be exactly 5 inches wide and 3 inches tall.

  1. Select the chart.
  2. Go to the "Format" tab under "Chart Tools".
  3. In the "Width" box, type "5".
  4. In the "Height" box, type "3".

Excel will now resize your chart to the exact dimensions you specified.

Tip: For consistent sizing across multiple charts, use the "Size" group on the "Format" tab to enter the same height and width values for each chart. This is more precise than manual dragging.
