How do I add a background in Teams?

Published in Microsoft Teams 3 mins read

You can add a background in Microsoft Teams before or during a meeting to enhance privacy or personalize your appearance. Here's how:

Adding a Background Before Joining a Meeting:

  1. Tap the Calendar tab: In the Teams app, locate and tap the "Calendar" tab.
  2. Find the meeting and Join: Find the meeting you wish to join and tap the "Join" button.
  3. Access Background Effects: In the pre-join screen (the screen that appears before you officially join the meeting), tap the "Change background" button, often represented by a camera icon with effects or the words "Background effects."
  4. Choose your Background:
    • Blur: Select "Blur" to blur your current background.
    • Image: Choose from the provided images or upload your own. To upload your own, look for an "Add new" or "+" button, which allows you to select an image file from your device. Ensure the image is appropriate and professional.
  5. Apply and Join: After selecting your desired background, tap "Done."
  6. Join the Meeting: Finally, tap "Join now" to enter the meeting with your selected background.

Adding a Background During a Meeting:

While the reference only covers pre-meeting background changes, this is how to do it during a meeting:

  1. Access Meeting Controls: During the meeting, move your mouse (if on desktop) or tap your screen (if on mobile) to reveal the meeting controls toolbar.
  2. More Actions Menu: Look for the "More actions" menu, typically represented by three dots (...). Click or tap it.
  3. Background Effects: Select "Background effects" from the menu options.
  4. Choose Your Background: The background settings panel will open. You can then select a blur effect, a provided image, or upload your own custom image.
  5. Apply: Select "Apply" to save and activate your chosen background. The change should take effect immediately.

Important Considerations:

  • Image Dimensions: For optimal results when uploading a custom image, use an image with a resolution of at least 1920x1080 pixels.
  • Performance: Using custom backgrounds, particularly animated ones, can sometimes impact performance, especially on older devices. If you experience issues, try using a static image or the blur effect.
  • Professionalism: Choose backgrounds that are appropriate for the meeting and represent you professionally, especially in work-related meetings.
