While the population of Iraq is mixed, with a Shia majority and a significant Sunni minority, Saddam Hussein hailed from a Sunni Arab family from the village of Al-Awja, near Tikrit in northern Iraq. His Sunni background played a role in the dynamics of his regime, particularly concerning the distribution of power. Although the Ba'ath party was officially secular, Saddam's inner circle was largely composed of Sunni Muslims, which contributed to sectarian tensions within the country, especially after the 2003 invasion.
