How Do You Make a Magma Block Lift?

Published in Minecraft 3 mins read

A magma block, by itself, doesn't lift things. However, it can be used in conjunction with water to create a downward water elevator in Minecraft, which gives the illusion of lifting something downwards. To create an upward water elevator, you'll use soul sand instead.

Here's how you can create a water elevator using magma blocks to pull entities downwards:

Creating a Downward Water Elevator (Using Magma Blocks)

  1. Build the Enclosure: Create a vertical shaft using glass blocks (or any other solid, non-transparent block). A typical size is 1x1 or 2x2 blocks in width and depth, and as high as you need the elevator to go. The glass allows you to see the water flow.

  2. Fill with Water: Fill the entire shaft with water. The easiest way to do this is to repeatedly place and remove water buckets at the top until the shaft is completely full of water source blocks. Using kelp is an alternative method, as described below, but is not always necessary.

  3. Replace Water with Source Blocks (Optional): (Generally not needed, but good practice for completeness.) If the water isn't already composed entirely of source blocks (i.e., you see streams), grow kelp from the bottom to the top of the shaft. This converts all water blocks into water source blocks. Then, break the kelp from the bottom up to avoid creating flowing water again.

  4. Place the Magma Block: At the bottom of the water shaft, replace one of the bottom blocks with a magma block.

How it Works

The magma block creates a downward current in the water. Any entities (players, mobs, items) that enter this water stream will be pulled downwards. The bubbles rising from the magma block contribute to this effect.

Materials Needed:

  • Glass blocks (or any solid block)
  • Water buckets
  • Magma block
  • (Optional) Kelp

Soul Sand for Upward Elevators

It's worth noting that you can create an upward elevator using soul sand instead of magma blocks. The process is virtually the same, except you replace a block at the bottom with soul sand. Soul sand creates bubbles that push entities upward. Remember, magma blocks pull things down, while soul sand pushes things up in a water elevator.

In summary, magma blocks don't lift things. They create a downward pull in water, useful for creating a downward water elevator.
