How do you mix paint on a wet palette?

Published in Miniature Painting 2 mins read

You can mix paint on a wet palette just like you would on a regular palette, but with a few adjustments. Since the surface is damp, the paint will be more fluid and require a slightly different approach.

  • Use a wet brush: Instead of starting with dry paint, use a brush loaded with water to activate the paint on the palette. Gently work the water into the paint until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Mix slowly and gently: Because the paint is more liquid, avoid mixing too vigorously. This could cause the paint to spread or become too thin. Instead, use a light touch and blend the colors slowly.
  • Avoid mixing near the edges: Mixing paint near the edges of the palette could lead to it spreading onto the damp surface. Try to keep your mixes towards the center of the palette.

Remember, you can always add more water to your mix if it becomes too thick. However, if you're finding that your paint is consistently too runny, it may be helpful to adjust the moisture level of your wet palette.
